The Saxion Q&A Sessions – Part 1: Consumer Behavior & Tourism (Various, English)




In March 2017 ChinaTalk’s Ed Sander gave a series of lectures for the students of Saxion’s minor ‘Doing business with China’. The lectures, which covered topics like e-commerce, social media and consumer behavior took the form of Q&A sessions. The students, after doing self-study on the week’s topic, would submit their questions prior to the lecture. Ed would then give the answers and have further discussions with the students.

One of the lectures concerned Chinese consumer behaviour and tourism. In the seven videos below we have combined the slides and recorded audio of the lecture to create so-called slidecasts. Each video, ranging from 3,5 to 16 minutes answers one or more of the student’s questions. Click on the images to watch each video on YouTube.

In a guest lecture for The Hague University of Applied Sciences ChinaTalk’s Ed Sander uses the business case of WeChat to show students how China in recent years has become a leader in digital and mobile innovation. Ed describes the three stages of development of WeChat (chat app, social network and m-commerce platform), explains why China has become a digital innovator and what it means for western countries and companies.

On the 27th of September 2016, ChinaTalk’s Ed Sander and MyChinaWeb’s Bart Horsten gave a duo presentation at the annual eTrade Summit. In this first part of the presentation Ed Sander explains why Chinese people have such a high interest in foreign products and what options they have to buy them.
In the second part, Bart Horsten explains how western companies can use cross-border e-commerce to sell to half a billion Chinese people. Part 2 can be viewed here.

In 40 minutes Ed gave the audience a thorough explanation of the development of WeChat and how this app and the Chinese microblog Sina Weibo can be used to reach the Chinese consumer. On the 3rd of March 2016 ChinaTalk’s Ed Sander gave a 1,5 hour lecture to international students of the Technical University of Leuven, Belgium. In the lecture Ed explained how China is no longer (just) a copycat but has become an important innovator of mobile and online technology. Part of the lecture, a case about the business model of smartphone manufacturer Xiaomi and an explanation why mobile commerce has been booming in China, can now be watched as a slidecast.

At the 2016 ACSSNL Talent Forum held at the Technical University of Delft ChinaTalk’s Ed Sander was asked to hold a TED style presentation for the Chinese students and scholars in the Nehterlands. In a 15 minute presentation Ed showed how China has moved from being a copycat of western products and services to being an innovator of internet technology, using cases of WeChat and Xiaomi. He also discusses what this means for the west and what the factors are that drive this sudden shift.
