On December 9th 2024, Lianne Baaij of Vereniging Nederland China VNC interviewed ChinaTalk’s Ed Sander about Temu, Shein and other Chinese webshops during a VNC China Café event. I shared insights from my research for Tech Buzz China. Questions that were discussed were:
▶️ How has Temu expanded its market share so quickly in the Netherlands and Europe? And how about Shein?
▶️ What technological and logistical innovations do these companies use to differentiate themselves from traditional players?
▶️ What makes these webshops so appealing to consumers?
▶️ How can these webshops offer so many products at such a low price level?
▶️ Are consumers aware of the environmental impact of these platforms, and how does this influence their purchasing behaviour?
▶️ How do Temu and Shein address criticism regarding sustainability and labour conditions?
▶️ What about product safety and quality?
▶️ Are there privacy, data security, or national security concerns regarding using apps like Shein or Temu?
▶️ What new developments or strategies can we expect from platforms like Temu and Shein?
▶️ How do you see the future of Chinese e-commerce platforms over the next five years?

VNC wrote the following report about the event:
On December 9, a new edition of the China Café, the place where professionals with a focus on China come together, took place.
This time, the fascinating and rapidly changing landscape of Chinese e-commerce took center stage. Ed Sander, China Tech Analyst, took us into the world of platforms such as Temu and Shein and explained how these companies are rewriting the rules of online shopping worldwide.
The evening revolved around the innovative approach of these platforms. Temu, part of Pinduoduo, uses smart techniques such as gamification and ‘member-get-member’ campaigns to bind users. Shein, the largest in the fast fashion market, invests heavily in influencers and its own production process, which allows it to respond to trends at lightning speed. Both companies combine customer focus with ultra-low prices and have managed to capture a large market share worldwide.
Of course, the downside of this rapid growth was also discussed. Think of criticism of working conditions and product quality. Temu has been trying to tackle low quality with a penalty system for suppliers since 2023, but it is not a structural solution. In the meantime, Shein is trying to compete with Temu and TikTok with a new marketplace.
Both companies are known for their speed and flexibility: they can implement innovations at lightning speed and adapt immediately to new regulations. For example, Temu currently manages to circumvent European quality standards by placing the responsibility for imports with the customer.
Europe faces the challenge of firmly anchoring sustainability requirements in legislation and regulations, so that these companies have to adhere to higher standards.
An important insight was that platforms such as Temu, Shein, AliExpress and TikTok — also known as the “four little dragons” — will not simply be driven out of the European market. They continue to innovate and put pressure on Western companies to work faster, smarter and more customer-oriented. Amazon is trying to join this race with ‘Amazon Haul’, something we can read more about on Substack soon.
Especially in Europe, companies and policymakers seem to underestimate the impact of these players. The most important lesson? European companies need to adapt to remain relevant. Faster delivery times, more focus on quality and strategic innovations are essential to be able to compete with these Asian giants.
The presentation was followed by an informal drink. The participants had plenty of opportunity to talk to Ed Sander and each other.
With this edition of the China Café, the participants not only got an inspiring view of the e-commerce trends from China, but also valuable lessons for the future. In short, another successful evening!
